Lashing & Securing Survey

Typical Scope

  • Observe the overall securing arrangement and restraint directions
  • Check visible condition and positioning of chains, web lashings, wires or other restraints
  • Review blocking, chocking, bedding and dunnage arrangements
  • Note sharp edges, poor contact protection, slack restraints or obvious geometry concerns
  • Photograph the final securing arrangement at the time of attendance

When This Survey Is Useful

  • Project cargo or machinery is moving by road or sea
  • The cargo has a high centre of gravity or irregular geometry
  • A pre-departure record of securing is required
  • A later incident may depend on the original lashing condition

Typical Deliverables

  • Photographic securing record
  • Description of observed arrangement and obvious concerns
  • Record of corrective actions observed during attendance
  • Cargo identification and transport context
  • Technical observations within the instructed scope

Information That Helps Before Attendance

  • Cargo description and identifying marks
  • Location and contact person on site
  • Incident or operational chronology
  • Available photographs and transport documents
  • Any specific questions the instructing party needs the report to address

Securing is a system, not a number of lashings

Effective cargo restraint depends on the complete system: the support surface, friction, blocking, restraint angles, pre-tension, contact protection and the direction of expected movement. Simply adding more lashings does not automatically make a load secure.

A useful survey records the arrangement as found, identifies visible concerns, and documents any adjustments made before departure. For complex heavy-lift or engineering calculations, specialist design or engineering review may also be required.
